Hello! An Introduction to a Sconnie
Hi! My name is Alyx, and I'm terrible at talking about myself but great at making lists so I figured I would use a list for the basics about me.
- My name is Alyx.
- I'm 20 years old (turning 21 in February).
- I'm a junior / Class of 2020.
- My major is in Advertising and I have a minor in Studio Art.
- I have three cats at home but none with me at school (yet...).
- I'm from Wisconsin.
- Yes, we have lots of cheese. We also have lots of cranberries! Did you know Wisconsin produces more cranberries than anywhere else in the world?
Time to end the list.
I'm an Advertising major now, but I actually just changed my major last semester from Studio Art. I kept Art on as a minor, but wanted to study the more practical side of art & design, so I ended up in Gaylord. So far it's going well! I'm still planning to graduate on time in 2020, but as far as what I'll do after graduation I'm not really sure. A career in graphic design would be great! My ultimate life goal is to own a cat cafe.
My winter break hasn't been too exciting. I think I've mostly done a lot of shopping and watched a lot of TV. The best show I watched over break was 'Tidying Up with Marie Kondo'. It definitely inspired me to be more purposeful with my possessions in 2019. The first thing I'm doing when I get back to my apartment is tidying up!
Although winter break hasn't been exciting, I had a great spring break this past year. I convinced a group of friends to road trip to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. It was a little scary, cold, and rainy at times, but overall it's one of the best trips I've ever taken and it left me with moments I'll never forget. I'm also super proud of some of the things our group accomplished, like climbing Angel's Landing Trail at Zion in the rain! Here are some pictures from our trip.

Oh, I love the idea of a cat cafe, Alyx (as you'll see when you get to the growth mindset stuff later, I really like cats... A LOT). Maybe you can use this class as a way to explore cat stories and legends from around the world! Thanks also for the gorgeous photographs; that one of Horseshoe Bend is especially beautiful: wow!
ReplyDeleteAbout pets: there's an extra credit Tech Tip if you want to add pictures of your cats to the "Padlet of Pets" ... the extra credit is a Week 2 thing, but you can do it now if you want (that's the idea with everything in this class: work ahead whenever you want). Here's the link: Padlet of Pets (plus a link to learn more about the Tech Tips)... one of my goals this week during Week Zero is to add some more Tech Tips there to the list. :-)
Hello Alyx,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your introduction post and the list that you created. I do not know anybody from Wisconsin, so that was a very interesting fact about the cranberries. I would have never guessed that. I think advertising is a great combination of your interests with a future career. I enjoyed reading your post and look forward to more as the semester goes on.
Best of luck!
-Andy
Hi Alyx,
ReplyDeleteIt's very cool that you're from Wisconsin. I have always wanted to visit! What an interesting fact about cranberries! I enjoyed reading this post because I love hiking, and I have been to those national parks. Sadly, I didn't do those hikes because I was with my parents though, but next time, for sure! Your pictures look amazing and you and your boyfriend are very cute! I look forward to reading your posts as the semester goes on.

Hey, Alyx!
ReplyDeleteYou took some beautiful pictures on your trip! I'd love to see either of those places at some point -- a bunch of my friends are really into hiking and we've been looking for a trip to take together. The idea of a cat cafe is great! With your advertising background, you'd have no problem getting publicity for it. Plus, who doesn't want a few cats around? Good luck this semester!
Hi Alyx,
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Wisconson cheese but I had no idea about the cranberries. I guess I never wondered where they grew before. Your photos of the grand canyon are beautiful. I went there for spring break a couple years ago and now it is one of my favorite places. It was cold when I went too, there was ice up around the rim, however, down in the canyon it was around 75 degrees.
Good luck on your classes this semester, I can't wait to read some of your stories!

Hey Alyx, I see you also have a boyfriend who loves cats. I can guarentee you that if you ever do open a cat cafe, especially here in Oklahoma, my boyfriend and I will probably come by at some point. I’ve got Marie Kondo’s show on my to-watch list, but I’m not sure if it’ll inspire me to totally declutter my place: my books bring me too much joy lol. Your trip to the Grand Canyon looks so cool, I bet it was a blast despite the weather!
ReplyDeleteHey Alyx,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, those are some awesome pictures of Zion and the Grand Canyon. I got to visit the Grand Canyon in 2018 as well, and I really enjoyed it. I did not know that Wisconsin was the world leader in cranberry production. One of my best friends here at school is from Wisconsin and he never mentioned it...
Last thing; good luck on the cat cafe. I think that would be really interesting and worth trying at least once right?

Hey Alyx, I love exploring the world and national parks as well, so it is really cool to see someone else with a similar passion! My sister graduated from OU and was also an Advertising major, so I can tell you firsthand that you're doing something tough and worthwhile in the end! Please let me know if the Cat Cafe ever comes to fruition!
ReplyDeleteHey Alyx!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really amazing that you get to do art! I really wanted to take an art class like beginning watercolour, but sadly they're only available for art majors/minors. Your pictures of the Grand Canyon are lovely. Also, the idea of a cat cafe is wonderful! I visited a few in Tokyo, but sadly the cats there seemed kind of grumpy. I know in America it can be more difficult to open up animal cafes because of all the animal rights advocates, but I have heard of some adoption places opening up cafes! It's a great way to promote their animals, and find them a home! Can't wait to see what else you'll contribute this semester! :)

Hi, Alyx.
ReplyDeleteWow, Wisconsin, that's a bit farther North than where most people at OU are from. How cool! I did not know about the cranberries, but you learn something new everyday.
I love the idea of a cat cafe so much! I want to open one too, but I am not majoring in business, and I have no idea how I would open a restaurant. I do work in a restaurant though...maybe I'll figure something out. Based on your cat cafe idea you seem like a really cool, awesome person that I would be friends with.
I like making lists too. I find it calming. I really do think we might make great friends.
Anyway, I hope you have a good semester and am wishing you the best!
Alyx,
ReplyDeleteA hiking trip like the one you described sounds like the perfect spring break trip. I wish I could pull off something like that. The views in those pictures make it seem like the hassle was worth it. I bet they do the actual views no justice. Keep on living an awesome life!
Best of luck in the course!

Hey Alyx,
ReplyDeleteI think it is super cool that you want to work in the field of graphic design! There are so many details when making an advertisement or poster look good, and I did not realize before working with some graphic designers that the subtle details are what really make a flyer look professional. It's awesome that you convinced your friends to go on a road trip, and I hope to hike in Zion National Park one day too!
Alyx, it was really great getting to know you some through your introduction post. I think it is so cool that we are able to interact even though we are in two separate classes (I'm in Indian Epics). I think it is cool that having an online class like this allows us to do that. Again, it was great getting to know you some and the best of luck to you on your future endeavors.
